- Montpensier, Antoine-Marie-Philippe-Louis d'Orléans, duke de
(1824-1890)
member of French and Spanish royal houses
The fifth son of King louis-philippe and Queen marie-amélie, Antoine-Marie-Philippe-Louis d'Orléans, duke de Montpensier was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He became a military officer and took part in the conquest of Algeria (1844-46). In 1846, his father arranged for his marriage to Maria Louisa de Bourbon, sister of queen Isabella II of Spain; however the marriage compromised the attempts of a diplomatic reconciliation between France and Great Britain. of liberal tendencies, the duke de Montpensier tried in vain to convince his father to recall François guizot as prime minister. After the revolution of 1848, he settled in Spain, acquired Spanish nationality, and was named Infante of Spain and captain-general (1859). Exiled to Portugal in 1868 because of his liberal views, he became a candidate for the throne (1870) but, rejected, went into exile in the Balearic islands after the accession of Amadeus of Savoy (1871). In 1873, however, he succeeded in gaining the Spanish crown for his son-in-law, who became King Alfonso XII.
